SEGA Sammy announces restructuring of the company, Toshihiro Nagoshi stepping down as CCO of SEGA to become a creative director

SEGA Sammy is restructuring the company and Toshihiro Nagoshi is stepping down as CCO of SEGA. Nagoshi will take on the role of creative director starting on April 1st. SEGA Sammy is also enacting an absorption-type corporate split between Sammy Corporation and SEGA Group Corporation. This is done to “transform its business structure to adapt to external development” and “build a more efficient structure for the head office operations of SEGA Sammy Group”. The corporate split is in effect starting on April 1st.

These decisions are being made to streamline the company group’s decision-making, organizational structure and operations. Considering year after year of reported losses by the company, the restructuring of SEGA Sammy seemed inevitable. In addition, the coronavirus pandemic definitely affected operations for SEGA Sammy as the closure of arcades and retailers led to losses. SEGA Sammy asked 650 employees to voluntarily retire this past November. Nagoshi stepping down means he can stick to developing games like Yakuza and no longer be tied to a higher-up role in the company group.
