Nintendo originally filed a patent back in May 2018 and registered back in April. The design is now publicly available and features a rail-less single Joy-Con for Switch. This means that the Joy-Con can’t connect to the Switch like normal Joy-Cons. It could be prioritized for use with a Switch Lite or Switch in docked mode. Lastly, images of the patent are available here.
