Rough times might be ahead going into next-gen has the coronavirus outbreak has affected Sony’s plans for the PS5. In a new report from Bloomberg, the outlet states that the outbreak has affected Sony’s promotional plans for the new console. The DualSense controller was revealed in a “hurried fashion” due to this. In addition, Sony is planning to make “far fewer units” of PS5 in year one compared to PS4. Sony plans to make around 5 to 6 million consoles before March 2021, roughly 1.5 to 2.5 million less than the PS4. On top of affected promotional plans, Sony might for-go a PS5 digital event entirely. The release date and price of the console would be revealed through other means, like a press release.

Game developers are expecting a $499 to $549 price point for the PS5 and expect Sony to depend on PS4 to bridge the gap between transitioning users to PS5. During the transition period, Sony wants to maintain high player connectivity with the PlayStation Network as its one of their most profitable ventures in the industry. Furthermore, price cuts for PS4 and PS4 Pro are being considered to attract more new PSN users. Lastly, Bloomberg states that production volume for PS5 is not finalized and could still change.
