With Summer Game Fest starting in just a few days, fans are wondering when we’ll learn more about the rest of Nintendo’s lineup for 2023. The last Nintendo Direct was in February of 2023, revealing Pikmin 4 and more information about The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. It’s been three months since the unveiling and after the recent release of Tears of the Kingdom we don’t know a lot about Nintendo’s upcoming lineup for the winter. Here’s everything we know about the next Nintendo Direct and the company’s lineup for the rest of the year.
Summer Game Fest
June doesn’t look to be the month of the next Nintendo Direct. For one, Nintendo recently dropped random information for Everybody 1-2 Switch! at the beginning of the month. Plus, Nintendo just unveiled a brand-new trailer for Pikmin 4, revealing more of the game’s lore before release. Thus, we almost definitely won’t get a proper Nintendo Direct in June, especially with all the new Nintendo announcements being randomly revealed in tweets or press releases. If that’s the case, when will we get a new Nintendo Direct?
The Next Nintendo Direct in 2023
Traditionally, there are usually two mainline Directs every year. One in the spring, around February or March, and one in the Fall. The Fall direct is almost always in September. It stands to reason that will be the next time we see Nintendo’s lineup for the rest of the year. It positions the conference to be right around the Fall and Winter season, which is the perfect time for the company to show off its Winter flagship lineup.
There is always the chance that Nintendo could unveil the next phase of their 2023 releases in July. July is right around the release of Pikmin 4 and would allow them to announce the games they have planned for the latter half of 2023. But at this point in the year, it is almost impossible to accurately predict when the next Nintendo Direct will be.
What Could Nintendo Announce?
After arguably their biggest release on the Nintendo Switch with Tears of the Kingdom, one question remains: what’s next? For one, there’s always the potential that the recently released Zelda game could get DLC. Both Age of Calamity and Breath of the Wild got DLC and a Season Pass post-launch, so perhaps Tears of the Kingdom will share the same fate.
There’s also the potential next Mario game, which has been speculated about for years. Super Mario Odyssey was released in 2017, just a few months after the Nintendo Switch’s original release. The only releases since have been remakes of games like New Super Mario Bros U and the original 3D Mario games, as well as expansions for Super Mario 3D World in the form of Bowser’s Fury. After the massive success of the recent Mario Movie, it’s only a matter of time until we get more news about the future of the Mario series.
Finally, there’s the long-anticipated Metroid Prime 4. First announced in 2017, the game restarted development entirely in 2018. Since then, next to no information has come out about the future of the Metroid franchise. And after the massive success of Metroid Dread, it hopefully won’t be long before we learn about the other most anticipated game on the Nintendo Switch.
